New House

Date July 25th, 2006

So I’ve been in my new house for a few weeks now and it’s great. Lots more space etc., and it’s been DIY all the way. Major cutback on the Leylandii at the weekend which took most of the day, and were hopefully getting gas central heating put in at the start of September so more disruption to come.

On that note, I don’t understand why the new gas meter can’t be installed by the same people who are piping the gas to the house, or by the people who are actually installing the boiler. It seems that Scotia Gas Networks plumb the stuff to an empty white box that get strapped to the side of the house, then a gas supplier such as Scottish Gas (how did they get that TLD BTW?) then have to install the meter, and (to get a good deal) a private CORGI-approved gas fitter has to install the boiler.

Why can’t it all be done by the same people?

Anyhoo, I’ll post a few pics when I get a chance.

With regards to the domain name of Scottish Gas; towards the mid to late ’90s the energy industry went through a period of de-regulisation, this meant that gas companies to sell electricity and electricity companies to sell gas and both could sell home insurance.

Most energy companies thought that they could provide a “one stop shop” for all a household’s energy and insurance needs and so snapped up appropriate domain names. However it didn’t pan out quite as they imagined, selling insurance isn’t as easy as it would first appear and companies spent as much time protecting their existing market as they did trying to grow a new one, so it all sort or petered out. Scottish Gas maintain the house.co.uk domain though.
