With regards to the domain name of Scottish Gas; towards the mid to late '90s the energy industry went through a period of de-regulisation, this meant that gas companies to sell electricity and electricity companies to sell gas and both could sell home insurance.

Most energy companies thought that they could provide a "one stop shop" for all a household's energy and insurance needs and so snapped up appropriate domain names. However it didn't pan out quite as they imagined, selling insurance isn't as easy as it would first appear and companies spent as much time protecting their existing market as they did trying to grow a new one, so it all sort or petered out. Scottish Gas maintain the house.co.uk domain though.
