Gotcha!

Date October 28th, 2007

I have a Windows Server 2003 R2 machine running this website amongst other things. My main machine runs Vista.

If I have to get access to the server, I use Remote Desktop as you do. Now I don’t know iof this a bug or not, but it’s quite annoying.

Remote Desktop saves the username and password for logging into the server in the .rdp file you create when you save your Remote Desktop settings. When you launch the .rdp file it automatically opens the Remote Desktop client and uses the settings you’ve saved previously.

Being a Lord of the Rings fan, I named all my machines after locations in Middle Earth, so my server is called Minas-Tirith. However, if you use the name of the machine you’re connecting to as the host name when creating your .rdp file, the login details are not passed to the server.

Grrrr.

After much searching of Google, it became apparent that if you used the IP address of the target machine, the details are passed okay.

Just another one to look out for…
